THE TRUTH ABOUT LIFE AFTER BABY

When postpartum
takes you by surprise.

You can love your baby and still feel overwhelmed by what happens after birth. Sadness. Fear. Anxiety. The physical, mental, emotional, and psychological changes that nobody quite prepared you for. Sometimes it feels as though they arrived all at once. Postpartum Is a Mother shares Chyna’s lived experience of postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum anxiety (PPA): the hard-to-say truths, what helped her, and the support she wants other mothers and families to find.

WORDS FOR WHAT YOU FEEL

Postpartum symptoms,
feelings & emotions.

If you are searching “Is this postpartum depression or anxiety?”, begin with what you are noticing. There is room to speak honestly here.

01 / DEPRESSION

When things feel heavy

Postpartum depression may include persistent sadness, loss of interest, guilt, irritability, or difficulty concentrating. Sleep and appetite can change, and daily care may feel hard.

02 / ANXIETY

When worry won’t quiet

Postpartum anxiety can involve intense worry, feeling nervous or scared, and upsetting thoughts that keep returning. Depression and anxiety can happen together.

03 / YOUR NEXT STEP

Put it into words

Notice what you feel, when it started, and how it affects your day. Bring those notes to a health care provider. A professional can offer screening and help you understand your options.

Baby blues or something more? Mild mood changes in the first two weeks after birth can be baby blues. Severe symptoms, symptoms lasting longer than two weeks, or difficulty caring for yourself deserve professional attention. You can ask for help sooner.

This is an educational feelings guide, not a diagnostic symptom checker. The book’s reflections can support a conversation; they do not replace assessment or treatment.

SUPPORT BEYOND THE PAGES

You deserve
care that meets you.

Postpartum depression and anxiety are treatable. Reach out to your doctor, midwife, nurse practitioner, or mental health professional to discuss what you are experiencing and the support that fits you.

FOR MOTHERS & THEIR SUPPORT SYSTEMS

For the mother.
And the people supporting her.

This book is written first for the mother experiencing postpartum depression, anxiety, the blues, or overwhelming changes after birth. It also gives partners, family, and friends a closer understanding of what she may be going through. Read it to understand her experience, recognise when professional support may be needed, and turn concern into specific help.

Understand her experience through the book ↗

Ask, then listen

Ask how she is doing and give her time to answer. Take her concerns seriously. Listen without judging or comparing her experience to someone else’s.

Take on a specific task

Offer a concrete plan: bring dinner, do the laundry, or take care of the baby while she rests or attends an appointment. Agree on what helps and follow through.

Make care easier to reach

Encourage a conversation with a health care provider. Offer help booking the appointment, arranging transport or childcare, or going with her if she wants.

Who is Postpartum Is a Mother for?

It is for women navigating life after birth, including postpartum depression, anxiety, sadness, and overwhelming physical and emotional changes. It is also for spouses, partners, family members, and friends who want to understand one mother’s lived experience and offer more thoughtful support.

Is this a personal story or a postpartum resource book?

Both personal storytelling and reflection shape the book. Chyna shares her experience alongside guided questions, space for writing, and support resources. It is a companion to your own story and to professional care.

Can I check my symptoms or feelings here?

The feelings guide can help you find words for what you are noticing. It does not score symptoms or provide a diagnosis. A health care provider can offer appropriate screening for postpartum depression and anxiety.

Can I have postpartum depression and anxiety at the same time?

Yes, they can occur together. Talk with a health care provider about the full range of your feelings, including sadness, fear, worry, and how they affect daily life. Read NICHD’s explanation.

How can I read a preview or buy the book?

MEET THE AUTHOR

Hi, I’m Chyna.

I’m a writer, creator, and mother of two. I wrote Postpartum Is a Mother to speak honestly about postpartum depression, anxiety, and the physical, emotional, mental, and psychological changes that can take a mother by surprise.

I share my experience with postpartum depression and anxiety because the dark parts deserve an honest voice, too. This work makes room for what helped me, what I wish I could have named sooner, and the support another mother or family may be looking for. Your experience may look different. You still deserve to be heard.

Chyna
